In accordance with Chapter 7, Part 2 of the Borough Ordinances, open burning is prohibited within the Borough (other than grilling food). Open burning includes the use of fire pits, fire bowls, chimineas, or similar devices. However, section 7-205 provides an exception for the use of fire pits, fire bowls, chimineas, or similar devices, under certain conditions, when an open burn permit is issued.
The Borough offers 2 types of permits: a single-use (1 day) permit, and an annual permit. An annual permit is only valid for a single device in a specified location. All requirements of Chapter 7, Part 2 of the ordinances must be complied with, regardless of whether a single-use or annual permit is requested.

After your request is received, the Fire Marshal will inspect the location where the open burning is to take place to ensure it is an appropriate and acceptable location and meets all the requirements of the ordinance. Additional precautions may be required.
Please note that the Fire Marshal’s position is a part-time position within the Borough. Although every attempt will be made to accommodate your request in a timely manner, no guarantee is provided that we will be able to respond without sufficient notice. Please be sure to submit your application sufficiently in advance to allow us time to respond.
Receiving a permit does not guarantee that you can burn. Open burning cannot be conducted if it is windy, or the air quality index is “Orange” or worse (air quality index >100), or other conditions make it unsuitable to burn on a given day. This is true for a 1-day permit or any day for an annual permit.
